The Labyrinth has been used periodically for thousands of years, in many different cultures. Now, once more, it is making a comeback. Because it is generic, it lends itself to many applications, both religious and secular. Some believe that labyrinths appear during the waning stages of empires, at a time of moral crisis. The labyrinth puts us back in touch with our roots, reflecting the solar system, nature, the earth and all of creation. It is no wonder that in these modern times, in which we have lost ourselves, the labyrinth has come again to remind us of our true identity and connection with Source. In a maze, it is said, you lose yourself. In a labyrinth, you find yourself.
The basic circle has become known in all cultures as the universal symbol for unity and wholeness as well as the continuity of all of life. Even if we don’t completely understand the wholeness and connectivity of creation in its entirety, the circle sparks a powerful innate remembrance of an unexplainable life force that exists within ALL. For this reason, the circle has become sacred in all cultures, and used for creating a special place where one can go within and just BE, with no outside influences. Once inside a circle, one feels at one with one’s own heart self and when the energies are allowed to flow as is appropriate for the individual, one cannot help but experience the inner longing for connectedness to this Universal Life Force energy. This is the immanent outcome for any who experience the walk of the Labyrinth.
Labyrinths have always been and are becoming once again a Sacred Art experience. The contemporary resurgence of labyrinths in the West is stemming from our deeply rooted urge to honor again the Sacredness of All of Life. In these days of constant worldly change, upheaval, and fear, there seems to be massive revival of the sacred arts, sacred geometry, ceremonies, healing practices, medicine ways, prayers, mantras and chants. The pattern of the Labyrinth is expressed on both conscious and unconscious levels. The meandering pathway is symbolic to the path of life we all walk. Carl Jung wrote that the Labyrinth pattern is an archetypal image of the psyche. Walking the Labyrinth is a journey to our own center beingness. The patterns of the Labyrinth are similar in design and conception to the mandalas of South Asian Buddhism, which are physical representations of the spiritual realm designed to aid in meditation and prayer.
The most powerful objective occurs when the conscious mind has been quieted, pacified, kept busy so the spiritual mind is then free to wander on its own and become aware of new truths, new possibilities, and new insights. The walk itself becomes a balanced rhythmic harmonic that sings to one’s soul. The path itself directs you, guides you, it leads, you unconsciously follow, as you lose the sense of where you are, and what is beautiful, is that the mind, body and spirit reach a sense of oneness that washes all other unnecessary thoughts and processing away. When you reach the center, you can then look beyond and see how far you’ve come physically and emotionally in such a short period of time, just as we must do periodically throughout our life’s journey. After a few moments of reflection, you are then open to receive insights, guidance and assistance in continuing your life’s path, as you begin your walk back to the entrance of the Labyrinth, prepared and renewed on all physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
The Labyrinth is a powerful tool to assist us in our spiritual transformation, whether we are seeking a new direction, a series of insights, a sense of peace and calm, a special grace, healing, or merely an intuitive glimpse of awareness. The Labyrinth is like a watering hole for the spirit, a place where we can wind down to quiet the mind, and when we do this, the door to our intuitive self and guidance opens.
